Livestream of NATO conference at National Defense University, “Effective Leadership for a Complex World”

On June 19, 2013, Sandra Martinez, addressed an audience of international and national military leaders and educators on the subject of “Effective Leadership for a Complex World,” gathered at the NATO-sponsored Third International Transformation (ITX3) Workshop/Conference, “Changing Mind-sets to Transform Security: Leadership Development for an Unpredictable and Complex World” hosted at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Martinez described a developmental approach to education and the development of military officers which she and her co-authors, Col (RET) John Agoglia and Dr. Matthew Levinger, argued in the paper can more effectively cultivate the later stage attributes and strategic capabilities required for effective leadership, collaboration among diverse partners in complex environments, and necessary transformation in our organizations. She also presented a decision loop, the SODAR (Sense, Orient, Decide, Act, Reflect) which emphasizes the critical importance of being aware of the assumptions informing a decision and being vigilant about changes in the environment, including the developing narrative and the concerns of participants.
